Reflection

This research pretty much covered my language beliefs, but the fact that some people don't know when to be serious and when to joke around bothers me. The questions about the jokes were taken as a joke. This research has me thinking the following things:

  1. What do people think about the n-word?

Recommendations

If I were to recommend this to someone, I would make sure they have serious and mature subjects. I would also try to research my topic more so that i can have more in-depth questions.

Conclusions

Based on my research, I have learned that not a lot of people take this kind of stuff seriously. They thought I was playing, but in reality it was the subjects who were played. i have learned their level of intellect when it comes to being serious and when it's time to joke around, and this was no joke to me. In conclusion, I will not repeat any kind of project like this, because some of my subjects insulted me.

2. If so, what are they?
-What do humans and jellybeans have in common? Nobody likes the black ones.
-What's faster than a black man running with your t.v.? The black man running behind him with the V.C.R.

I feel bad for the people that get upset over it because I know they can hurt people's feelings...

4. Are there any jokes that you've heard about your race or religion?
-Yes

5. If so, what are they?
-Read #2

6. How did you feel?
- I feel upset when people that are not my race tell the jokes, but when people that are black (like me) [say them] I don't mind so much... I don't know why!!! :(

Results of Survey

The people who used "blacks" are the red, who used "African-Americans" are blue, and people who didn't use either are green.

As you can see, many people refer to African- American people as "blacks" which is not a race, it is indeed a color. Not all African-American people are "black"; some are indeed lighter than the night sky. So, in conclusion, African-Americans should not be referred to as "blacks".

My Research Goals

I want to know more about why people discriminate against different religions, races, and sexes, and I would like to know what people in DHS do that. I want to know the words they use, the dirty jokes they laugh at, and why they even do it.

"Demeaning Words Must Go" Summary

The "N" word... A word that used to be used to degrade African-Americans, but is used today as if someone was saying their own name. Kurtis Blow says, "Demeaning words must go!" As a founding father of hip-hop, Kurtis Blow is trying to throw away the pain of the n-word, but says that the pain will always be here. He says that people of other races are starting to use this word as a "compliment" but they just don't understand how wrong it is. He attended a "funeral" for the n-word in southern Detroit, and tried to bury the word and make it disappear forever. In conclusion, the n-word is still used today, and no one will ever face the facts.

My Language Beliefs

I believe that verbal language is a way of communication in which it depends on who you are talking to and what you're talking about. I also believe that when you are with a certain person or group of people, you tend to talk about the same topic or something related to that topic all the time. It's just a matter of thinking. You tend to not think when you are with your friends that you are comfortable with, because you talk about anything. It's just the way your mind gets when you're around certain people.
